When visiting Barcelona, it is a great idea to spend some time visiting some of the popular nearby locations. One of these is most certainly Andorra, one of Europe’s best-kept secrets. Despite some popular thought, Andorra is not a part of Northern Spain, but a tiny country in its own right. Although it is one of the smallest countries in the world, it is a great place to visit if you would like a unique experience while visiting Spain. If you are interested in experiencing a Barcelona to Andorra day trip, this post will provide information on must-see sites in Andorra, the best way to get to Andorra from Barcelona, and tips on the best guided tour of Andorra.

Overview of Andorra

As mentioned above, Andorra is a small principality located in the Pyrenees mountains between Spain and France. It is the sixth-smallest country in Europe and the 16th-smallest country in the world. Despite its small size, Andorra is a thriving tourist destination with a rich cultural heritage and stunning natural beauty.

The country has a population of around 77,000 people, with the majority speaking Catalan, the official language of Andorra. Spanish, French, and Portuguese are also widely spoken. The official currency is the euro, and the country has a highly developed economy based on tourism, banking, and commerce.

Andorra is a parliamentary democracy with a unique political system. The country is co-ruled by two princes, the Bishop of Urgell in Spain and the President of France. The two princes have mostly ceremonial powers, and the day-to-day affairs of the country are handled by the Head of Government and the General Council, a unicameral parliament with 28 members. Andorra has a highly developed social welfare system, and the country enjoys a high standard of living with a low unemployment rate.

History of Andorra

Andorra has a rich history that dates back to prehistoric times, and it has been inhabited by various groups, including the Iberians, Romans, and Visigoths. In the 8th century, the Moors invaded Andorra and ruled it for several centuries until the Spanish and French forces pushed them out in the 13th century.

In the 13th century, Andorra became a co-principality under the rule of the Bishop of Urgell in Spain and the Count of Foix in France.

This unique political arrangement has continued to this day, and the country is still ruled by two co-princes, although their powers are mostly ceremonial. During the medieval period, Andorra was known for its iron mines, which were a valuable resource and source of wealth for the country.

In the 20th century, Andorra went through significant changes, including the introduction of a modern constitution in 1993, which made the country a parliamentary democracy. Andorra also became a member of the United Nations in 1993 and the Council of Europe in 1994. Today, Andorra is a thriving tourist destination and a tax haven, with a robust economy based on tourism, banking, and commerce.

How to get from Barcelona to Andorra by Tour

There are a variety of ways to get to Andorra from Barcelona, but based on my experience, I personally think that taking one of the available Andorra day tours is the best option. This is the easiest way to get there as you get benefits such as planned itinerary and dedicated tour guide. Below are a few tours that I think are the best options, depending on your needs:

The Original Three Countries in One Day: France, Andorra, Spain from Barcelona

This tour is the most popular for a Barcelona to Andorra Day Trip, and I’ll add, it is the way that I made the trip myself. What is unique about this tour is that it also includes two additional stops: The medieval town of Baga and the medieval town of Ax-Les-Thermes in France. So as the name mentions, you will travel to three countries in one day! Your day will look something like this on the tour:

After an early start to your day, meet at the tour agency and board the bus with your tour guide and fellow travelers for the drive to the first stop, Baga.

Stop in Baga, a small town located in the province of Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. It is situated in the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains and has a population of around 2,000 people. The town is known for its historic center, which features narrow streets and traditional stone houses, as well as its well-preserved medieval walls and castle.

Here you’ll get some coffee and spend time wandering the streets of this very cute town. You’ll also learn a bit about the history of Baga and the cities ties to the Catalonian independence movement.

Then you will travel to the next country, France. Here, you’ll visit Ax-Les-Thermes, a quaint village located in the Ariège department in the Occitanie region of France. It is in the heart of the French Pyrenees, and is known for its natural hot springs, which have been used for therapeutic purposes since ancient times.

The town is popular with tourists who come to enjoy the thermal baths and spa treatments, as well as the outdoor activities offered in the surrounding Pyrenees Mountains, such as hiking, skiing, and mountain biking. Ax-Les-Thermes also has a charming historic center, with narrow streets and traditional architecture, and is home to a number of restaurants and cafes serving delicious French cuisine.

While here, you’ll have time to visit the local market and do some shopping, and have a traditional lunch in one of the local restaurants. In addition, there are open hot springs in the city center where you can rest your (potentially) tired feet before you travel to the next stop.

The final country on the trip, and real star of the show, is a trip through the beautiful country of Andorra. This is where you spend the majority of your time on the tour. While in Andorra, you’ll travel thorough the amazing high mountain passes in the Pyranees and stop in the mountains for some panoramic views.

If you visit during the summer time, you will notice a distinct change in temperature here. It can be quite cool in the mountains, given the high altitude. After traveling thorough the mountains, you will stop to visit the capital Andorra La Vella for a few hours before returning to Barcelona.

I had a wonderful time on this tour, and do recommend that you consider it when traveling to Andorra.
